A Total Surprise
The price of some Items on the Grand Exchange did a total surprise to most Runescape Merchanters the other day – and it’s one of the reasons why I created my Runescape Merchating Guides.
A great number of merchers got what we call ‘killed’ the other day on the G.E. Almost all the new merchers are now wondering what they did wrong…
The thing is… there isn’t anything that any of them did right — because they don’t know what the right thing is.
So in this article, I’m going to talk about the correct thing to do at the beginning of a trade or Merch.
Most new Merchanters on Runescape don’t even know the prices on the Grand Exchange can do what it did to them this week!
How you manage your trades doesn’t matter much until the market starts a big move – that separates the big winners and big losers.
It’s a sad thing to see. There are Merchanters today that can’t buy basic Runescape armor for training or quests – and they can’t even sell their inventory of Merch Items at the lowest in the GE. It just never occurred to them that what happened was even a possability. You might say they were ‘over positioned’ in the market.
Everything they did was based on their thoughts of how much they could take out of the GE today. Their trades are designed to lose – but not because of the Merch Clans or the way the GE works – but by their own hand. The worst part is – these new Merchers don’t even know that all their losses were at their own hands.
When someone dumps early on a Merched Item, you can lose a fortune is such a short period of time. It has happened to every Mercher – it has happened to me.
Why does this happen?
Mostly because a traders plan doesn’t consider ‘what if I’m wrong?’ Their thoughts are always counting how much profit they might make.
The First Assumption
Let’s say we are driving our car down a urban lane and park on the street before a house. Imagine we open our door just as another car is driving by… in most cases, the drive of the other car will try to avoid the collision – not wanting to hurt another, and for self preservation.
However, when trading in the Grand Exchange, if we were to ‘open our car door’, or make a mistake in our trades – everyone would aiming to take your door off as quickly as possible! They are aiming to take your money!
Our First Assumption MUST BE that
Merching is NOT a favorable game.
Most trader do the opposite of what is correct by selling items only when proven wrong, making their exposure and risk much higher.
Keep Your Losses Small
Let the market tell you your position is proven correct but never let the market tell you that your position is wrong. The correct way to Merch, is to hold the item once they prove you to be correct.
Sell your item early if it doesn’t prove correct. If you wait until the price is dropping you end up losing more, and you also have to face the demoralizing affect being proven wrong.
Get out of stagnant priced markets quickly, keep your proper frame of mind, and evaluate the markets again.
Most traders keep their items until the price proves them wrong. Linkbuilder, the Chief Merchaning Advisor for LumbridgeCity, doesn’t keep any item unless it proves to be correct.
Keep in mind that Merchers are usually unaware that Merchanting on the Grand Exchange is a loser’s game. He who loses best will win in the end!
