Electricity can be hazardous to not only your Xbox, but you as well. For humans, it's your everyday 110 volt AC that your Xbox gets plugged into that can cause harm. For the electronics in your Xbox, it's static electricity that's lethal.
Part 1 - Keep yourself safe.
It is commonly believed that you need thousands of volts to get electrocuted. As you've probably heard many times, it's not the volts but the current or amps that flow through your body that is lethal. It's not unusual for people to get electrocuted by everyday electrical appliances powered by 110 volts AC.
How can this happen? If you provide a low resistance pathway through your heart, 110 volts is just as deadly as 1000 volts. Skin that is dry, thick and calloused provides greater resistance to electrical current than wet skin such as a raw bleeding wound, your tongue, or sweaty skin. Skin contact over a large area with a power source has less resistance to electrical current than skin contact over a small area.
Current going into your hand and out of the shoulder may be very painful. But the same amount of current flowing into the right hand and out of the left hand can stop your heart. This is because your heart is located on a path between your left hand and right hand.
This is also true for electrical current that flows into your hand and out a foot. Electricians will sometimes work with only one hand while wearing insulated boots to prevent current from flowing through the vital organs.
So what does this mean to you? Before opening up your Xbox, remember to unplug the power supply from the wall outlet.
Part 2 - Keep your Xbox safe.
We've all been zapped by a doorknob when the air is very dry. We were probably walking across a carpet before reaching for the knob. This spark is caused by static electricity that built up within our body when we crossed the carpet. Static electricity is absolutely lethal to micro electronics.
Static charge buildup by itself doesn't cause damage, it's the flow of current when the charge gets discharged. If you should see, feel, or hear a static discharge after touching the mother board of your Xbox, there's a good chance that damage has been done.
Situations favorable to static electricity are wearing polyester clothing, very low humidity, and carpeting. When working on your Xbox, wear clothing made of cotton. Work in a room without a carpet with a working humidifier. The relative humidity of the room should be at least 35%.
