Rough landing for radio-controlled plane club

Radio Controlled Planes: A group of radio-controlled airplane enthusiasts uprooted from its home in Lodi three years ago has found itself grounded once again after neighbors complained about noise from the high-powered toys. The Tokay Radio Control Modelers club had been using a 10-acre parcel owned by San Joaquin County since last year to fly radio-controlled planes and helicopters after being displaced from Lodi's Pixley Park in 2004.

But the relocation didn't sit well with neighbors in the rural area southeast of Galt, who were more accustomed to birds chirping than whirring engines.Nina Edwards, who lives about a quarter-mile from the site, said the noise was "like a chain saw right outside your window."Her husband, Jim Edwards, compared it with another common landscaping tool: "It's like living next to a factory that tests weed eaters seven days a week." Other neighbors have complained about the noise.

Celebrate the little boy in dad

Radio Controlled Helicopters: Father's Day doesn't have to be about Old Spice and tie racks. Ask any father and he'll tell you. But there's something else he probably won't tell you, and here it is: The gifts he secretly lusts after are really cool toys for grown-up boys - stuff like classic electric guitars, little radio-controlled helicopters and large, shiny propane grills.

Dads like to make noise Jay Heath has "the guitar dad always wanted" among the hundreds of guitars in his shop, Middletown Music, 5238 Summit Bridge Road. That's the American-made Fender Stratocaster in the classic sunburst finish. "You've got your three single-coil pickups, medium-jumbo frets and a two-point fulcrum tremolo system [whammy bar]. This is the one dad would be most proud to own," said Dave Bartlett, a guitarist and Middletown Music employee.

Sam turns a hobby into model career

Radio Controlled Toys: "I remember Dad saying 'it will never last," says Sam Harris, now manager of HobbyStores, the shop where he first went as a little boy. That was 18 years ago, when the model shop opened in the old Co-op store, a lonely little retail outlet, a stranger to "footfall".Yet this is a small Mecca to those who love planes and cars and motorbikes and helicopters, and tall ships too big to put in your pocket and too small to take you anywhere.

HobbyStores in High Street, Trumpington turns over £300,000 a year, and keeps a lot of people very happy."From lawyers to labourers, they all come here," says Sam, whose own preference is cars. There's a Hummer sitting in the centre of the shop, big fat tyres, it will get up to 50mph, and it only costs £800: "It's got a 26cc chainsaw engine on board."There's a fabulous helicopter in the window, Sam's got them from £25 to £2,500, all radio-controlled, I can't wait for my grandsons to get a bit older.

Tehachapi Skywatch

Radio Controlled Helicopters: A few weeks ago another small plane went down with the loss of two more souls in the infamous Tehachapi Triangle. Other articles have covered that tragedy, and far be it from me to make any judgments before the investigation is complete. I just want to touch on the issues that lead to more than our share of general aviation accidents. The Tehachapi Triangle is the area between Gorman, Bakersfield, and Mojave.

This encompasses most of the Tehachapi Mountain Range and the Tehachapi Valley. According to one source, there have been nineteen accidents in the last fifteen years within that area. Our local aviators are well aware that they operate in an area plagued with potential dangers. However, those who don't fly are probably not aware of the challenges we face here. The mountains. That hazard seems obvious enough.

Week in Review

Radio-controlled Toys: A federal judge in Charleston released former Charleston Southern University economics professor Al Parish last week on a $1 million personal recognizance bond, despite the objections of prosecutors who contend he's still a flight risk. Parish will remain under both electronic monitoring and the supervision of family until his criminal trial date on federal fraud charges. U.S. Magistrate Judge George Kosko granted Parish's release, saying no proof had been uncovered of hidden assets.

TV pilot declined by ABCA Warner Bros. Television pilot that spent $4 million in Charleston over three months earlier this year was recently turned down by the ABC network, according to South Carolina Film Commissioner Jeff Monks.Monk said it's possible but unlikely that another network could order the show.
